create green jobs, DOE has delivered $106 million in
Energy
Efficiency and Conservation Block Grants to Delaware,
Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Massachusetts, Oklahoma,
Tennessee,
Vermont, and Virginia.

California Accelerates its Pursuit of Clean Energy
California is using a two-pronged approach in committing to
clean energy, with the governor mandating that a third of the
state's electricity come from renewable energy by 2020, while
the state's utility commission is backing a $3.1 billion budget
for energy efficiency over the next three years.

Recovery Act Helps to Fund Transmission Line for Montana Wind Power
DOE is helping the development of wind power in Montana by
supporting a transmission line that runs from Great Falls,
Montana, to Alberta, Canada. Recovery Act funds will back
$161 million in loans for the project, which is expected to
spark the development of a new 300-megawatt wind project.

Agriculture Department Grants $62.5 Million for Clean Energy
Rural businesses in 45 states and Puerto Rico will benefit from
705 grants and loan guarantees provided through the Rural
Energy for America Program.

HUD Grants $300 million in Recovery Act Funds for Green Housing
The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development
(HUD) is awarding $300 million to 36 public housing agencies
in 24 states, as well as the District of Columbia, to help create
more energy efficient public housing.

G20 Nations Commit to Phase Out Fossil Fuel Subsidies
The leaders of 20 key countries from throughout the world
have agreed to phase out "inefficient" fossil fuel subsidies
over the medium term. The Group of 20, or G20, noted
recent studies that predict a 10% reduction in global
greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 if the subsidies are
eliminated.

Secretary Chu Announces up to $12.5 Million in Recovery Act Funding for New Graduate Fellowships in Science, Mathematics and Engineering
Washington, DC - U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced today that up to $12.5 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will be awarded in early 2010 to support at least 80 graduate fellowships to U.S. students pursuing advanced degrees in science, mathematics, and engineering through the newly created Department of Energy Office of Science Graduate Fellowship program.

United States and Italy Sign Agreements to Advance Developments in Nuclear Energy

National Labs Work to Settle PHEV Fuel Economy Conundrum
The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) recently joined forces with researchers from Idaho National Laboratory (INL) and Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) to take the lead in developing and testing a new method for predicting the real-world fuel and electricity consumption of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). After examining data on the only PHEV currently available in large numbers, the NREL-developed method shows promise for reasonably predicting the PHEV’s average fuel and electricity use.

DOT, EPA Propose to Improve Fuel Economy and Reduce Greenhouse Gases
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are proposing new
standards for vehicle fuel economy and greenhouse gas
emissions. The new standards will raise the average fuel
economy of light-duty vehicles to 35.5 miles per gallon by
2016.
